Accurate citation of references in scientific research is a fundamental requirement of academic norms. Establishing a scientific national standard for bibliographic references and citations and revising it periodically is of great significance for academic writing and scholarly publishing. GB/T 7714—2025 Information and Documentation—Rules for Bibliographic References and Citations to Information Resources was officially released in 2025 and will replace the GB/T 7714—2015 edition in July 2026. This study aims to analyze and comment on the revisions in GB/T 7714—2025 Information and Documentation—Rules for Bibliographic References and Citations to Information Resources, highlights key improvements, identify areas for further optimization, provide guidance for its implementation, and offer suggestions for future refinements.

This paper systematically examines the chapter structure, reference elements, document types, and specific rules of GB/T 7714—2025 Information and Documentation—Rules for Bibliographic References and Citations to Information Resources. By combining analysis of the standard's provisions with real-world cases from academic publishing practice, it evaluates the scientificity and applicability of the revised content of the new national standard. Through content comparison, case studies and summarization, this paper extracts both the strengths and potential improvements of the new edition. GB/T 7714—2025 Information and Documentation—Rules for Bibliographic References and Citations to Information Resources demonstrates excellence in five major aspects: ① Restructured outline logic — chapters are reordered according to the principle of "general before specific", enhancing systematicity and clarity; ② Innovative reference element table — incorporating bibliographic classification principles to improve readability and usability; ③ Interchangeable and analogous document type mechanism — clarifying that both content and form determine citation format, ensuring flexibility and interoperability; ④ Addition of emerging document types and refinement of speial citation formats, reflecting timeliness and inclusiveness; ⑤ Comprehensive detail improvement — resolving ambiguities encountered in practice, demonstrating meticulousness and thoroughness. As a major revision of China's national standard for bibliographic references and citations to information resources, GB/T 7714—2025 Information and Documentation—Rules for Bibliographic References and Citations to Information Resources not only streamlines the macro-level logical framework, but also improves micro-level citation details. However, there is still room for optimization in some details of the new national standard. The paper suggests that future revisions could focus on: refining elements such as creators, titles, publication information, and dates of creation/publication/modification and access; improving existing reference types such as standards and conference proceedings; adding emerging reference types such as laws and regulations, official government documents, and code repositories; and correcting minor technical flaws. Such enhancements would enable the standard to better adapt to evolving academic ecosystems.
